Pittsboro, N.C. – Luck Stone’s crushed stone operation in Pittsboro, N.C. has taken environmental stewardship to the next level. In a partnership with Piedmont Biofuels, the Pittsboro operation has started using blended biodiesel that is produced locally for all of its mobile equipment that is powered by petroleum diesel.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Piedmont Biofuels,” said Steve Demeyer, Luck Stone’s Pittsboro Plant Manager. “We started working with Piedmont Biofuels on a test basis to see how the biodiesel product would work and we quickly saw the benefits. Our partnership with Piedmont Biofuels is giving us another opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the environment and safety while operating in a way that supports the success of the community and the environment.”
Lyle Estill, Co-founder of Piedmont Biofuels, stated, “Piedmont is pleased to be working with a company that is environmentally conscious and community minded.” Estill added, “Our work together exemplifies how a partnership like this can have a local impact that reduces emissions and our reliance on foreign fuel sources.”
Doug Palmore, Luck Stone’s Director of Risk, Real Estate and Construction Engineering, said, “This partnership exemplifies Luck Stone’s mission to support innovative products and business practices that enhance the lives of our customers and the communities we serve.” Palmore continued, “Piedmont’s biofuel provides a new product that helps Luck Stone’s Pittsboro operation reduce its carbon footprint and remain good stewards of the environment.”
Biodiesel is a clean burning fuel that can act as a replacement for petroleum diesel and, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, reduces carbon emissions by more than 20%. Through a series of chemical reactions, fats from soy beans or cooking oil are converted to a substance that is suitable for any diesel engine, without modification.
About Piedmont Biofuels
Piedmont Biofuels’ pursuit of their vision for locally produced energy has taken it from a backyard biodiesel production operation for personal use to a major supplier in the Raleigh-Durham area. In 2005, the organization built a commercial production plant that now has an annual capacity of one million gallons of on-road, National Biodiesel Board certified biofuel. In addition to its production facility, Piedmont Biofuels serves as consultants, educators, and lobbyists, while also operating a worker and member owned cooperative, with the mission to lead the grassroots sustainability movement in North Carolina by using and encouraging the use of clean, renewable biofuels.
