Community News Luck Stone’s Truck Safety Event at Massaponax High School

Luck Stone held its fourth annual Truck Safety event at Massaponax High School on Wednesday, May 14 from 8 AM until 2 PM. Luck Stone teamed up with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office and the Pennsylvania Driving Under the Influence (PADUI) program, to raise student awareness about safety when driving near trucks and about the dangers of drunk driving.

Ralph Covington, the Plant Manager at Luck Stone’s Massaponax Quarry, said “This training gives students a good understanding of the “not to’s” on the road, and what truck drivers deal with every day. In the end, it makes everyone a better driver.”

About a dozen Luck Stone representatives were on-site to teach almost 250 students how to safely share the roads with truck drivers. They conducted safety demonstrations and gave students the opportunity to experience a truck driver’s view of the road by sitting in trucks that had passenger vehicles positioned around them. Separated into groups of 5 to 10, students saw firsthand how difficult it was for them to see the cars that were surrounding the truck, and they were educated about other truck safety related issues including stopping distances, weight limits, truck maintenance, and turning radius.

Also, by teaming with the Sheriff’s Office and PADUI, students were able to rotate between three stations: the Luck Stone truck safety station; the Sheriff’s office station where they experienced “drunk goggles,” goggles which altered the wearer’s vision; and the PADUI station, which allowed students to drive the “safety bug,” a Volkswagen Beetle that simulated the delayed response an impaired driver experiences.

Danny Shaha, Community Relations Manager for Luck Stone, said “Luck Stone strives to maintain a safe environment in and around our operations, and we are happy to partner with local schools to help educate their students. Events like this are a demonstration of the sincere commitment we have to enhancing the communities within which we operate.”
